FuelAid: Driving Health Forward Across New Brunswick
For many people across New Brunswick, getting to a medical appointment isn’t as simple as it sounds. Rising fuel prices, long drives to hospitals, and limited public transportation can make it difficult — and sometimes impossible — for patients to reach the care they need.
For those living in rural communities, even filling the gas tank can be a struggle. But missing appointments or delaying treatment can have serious consequences for one’s health.
That’s where FuelAid comes in.
A Simple Idea Making a Big Difference
FuelAid is a New Brunswick–based program dedicated to helping patients attend vital medical appointments by providing pre-paid gift cards for gas to those who need them most. These cards help cover the cost of travel to hospitals, clinics, and treatment centres like the IWK, and hospitals across New Brunswick.— Together, we are moving one of the biggest barriers to care.
The mission is simple: make sure no one has to miss a medical appointment because they can’t afford to get there.
How It Works
FuelAid works hand in hand with Horizon Health social workers and healthcare professionals across the province. These partners identify patients who are struggling with transportation costs and discreetly provide FuelAid cards in private, ensuring dignity and confidentiality.
This quiet, compassionate process allows help to reach people when they need it most — whether it’s a cancer patient traveling for chemotherapy from Minto travelling to Fredericton, a parent taking their child to a specialist at the IWK in Halifax, or a senior from McAdam attending a follow-up appointment in Saint John after surgery.
Every card represents more than just a few litres of gas. It represents relief, hope, and the reassurance that someone cares enough to help.
